Dont get caught by Xbox 360 gamertag phishing scams!
In this day and age on the internet, phishing is rife, whether people are trying to extract your bank details, your pin number, or your email account details, basically anything that can be of any worth. Your Xbox LIVE Gamer Tag and its related account are not safe either.
Phishing (fishing) is a way to obtain your details by deception, for example, you receive an email advising you that your bank account has been compromised and you need to log in to correct the problem, you’re given a link to follow to log in, however this link will lead you to a fake or “spoof” website which tends to look very much like the real deal. From here, all details you enter are captured by the crooks and used for their gain and your loss.
There are a number of popular ways in which scammers try to obtain your Xbox Live details; these can include a promise of free Microsoft Points or gold subscription, obtaining a particularly difficult achievement under your Gamer Tag or maybe a limited edition in game item such as the Gold Lancer in Gears of War 2.
There are a number of videos on YouTube promising such things, what do you have to do? Either visit a website and enter you details which tend to include your email address, Gamer Tag and password, or download a “code generator”. The first option will of course take all the details you’ve entered and send them back to the creator, giving them free reign over the account and the so called code generator’s are riddled with viruses and sure enough, completely fake.
Through which ever means they try, they have one single goal, to obtain your details and use it to their advantage, if you have a credit or debit card linked to your account, they’ll be able to spend as much as they want at your expense.
Rule of thumb is simple; never give your details out to anyone, for whatever reason and as they say, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
