HDMI cable technology- redefining High Definition broadcast

One of the most important media used for broadcasting high definition audio/video stream on a multimedia device is an HDMI cable. HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface which is used as a digital alternative to traditional analog standard broadcasts. Traditionally used analog broadcast signals correspond to Radio Frequency, VGA, composite video, SCART component video, etc.

HDMI cable interface is most useful when used with digital audio/video devices including gaming consoles such as PS3 and Xbox 360 as well as Blu-Ray players and set top boxes. HDMI cable supports single cable interface as well as any major PC/TV video format. Best use of HDMI cable is observed with high-definition video with up to eight digital audio channels. A complementary CEC connection is used with HDMI cable to implement a mutual control system that allows consumer to operate multiple multimedia devices with the same remote control.

One of the best features of HDMI technology includes full compatibility with Digital Video Interface signal that eliminates the need of any kind of conversion. No significant loss of video quality is observed when you convert DVI format stream into an HDMI stream using compatible adapter.

In a standard female HDMI plug found in desktop computers and high-end TVs, there are 19 pins. Data signal operated by HDMI cable is of bandwidth 10.2 Gbit/s with up to 1600p video signal support. Even higher resolution video is supported if consumer requires it.

Generally HDMI cables are pretty costly at retail stores. A common user need not buy high-end cable presented in retail stores. A daily-use HDMI cable can be brought for under $10 at select online retail stores such as www.gizmodo.com. While HDMI technology is certainly not used to its full extent, using a bunch of HDMI cables, piracy can be prevented in future.

The difference between the Xbox 360 1080p on Hdmi and 1080i on component.?

OK i have heard so many different opinions and its driving me crazy! I have a 360 coming out on 1080i thru component because my tv cant do 1080p thru component. I need to no if its worth $85 for a Hdmi conversion kit because I have the premium. I have a 65′ mitshubitchi 1080p dlp TV. So is it worth upgrading from 1080i on component to 1080p on hdmi.

If this is a “conversion kit” like the MadCatz kit, the answer is “no”, this is not likely to help improve your picture much. But read on.

There are a few things HDMI does for you. One is changing from analog component to digital. If you got digital direct from the X-box to the HDMI port on the Mitsubishi, you might see better quality (technically, it will be better… not all users/TVs will demonstrate a marked difference, but you have a pretty good TV). However, that’s not your situation here.. the MadCatz will do an analog to digital conversion and output HDMI. But your Mitsubishi will do an analog to digital conversion on the component input anyway, and probably do it better than a $90 dongle.

Second is progressive-scan video… your X-box can apparently output 1080p over component, but your TV can only accept it via HDMI. For some things, that’s actually not all that important… a modern TV like your Mitsubishi is always going to upconvert to 1080p anyway.. it’s display can’t produce a 1080i picture. Period. If you play a film, the TV will probably do a progressive inverse telecine… it’s likely to look as good at 1080i as 1080p for most sources.

HOWEVER, video games are the only potential source around with real 1080/60p content… Blu-Ray only does 1080/24p (some players will output at 1080/60p, but the temporal content is only at 24 frames per second). If you have X-box games that really run at 1080/60p, this could in theory improve your video a bit on those games if it does what it claims to do. However, at least based on a Google search, there are only a fair handful of X-Box 360 games that run at full 1080p.

And if you look at the review quoted below, they didn’t see any gaming improvements (but did they have any 1080p games?) with the Mad Catz device. The reviewers didn’t like it.
