Xbox 360 Ethernet Cable 30 Ft
Which wireless router/adapter/etc. should I choose?
I currently own these items that use the internet (DSL for us):
-Desktop (no wireless card)
-Laptop (able to connect to wireless)
-Xbox 360
-PS2 (Rarely used, if at all lately)
I am currently using a router, but the ethernet cables running all over the place is driving me NUTS! All of the items above, excluding the desktop, are located in one room of the house. The desktop is located on the opposite end of the house, about 30 ft. away from the main room.
I’m not looking to spend too much money.
I’ve heard of a Wireless adapters (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2688 ), would this work on my desktop PC if I bought a wireless router?
What is this “Wireless G” and “N”, “B”, etc. stuff I see?
Our neighbors probably don’t even own a computer, so security isn’t much of an issue.
Anyone mind giving examples or links with suggestions or comments? Thanks!
I would Go with a Linksys Wireless G router, and a PCI wireless adapter card for your PC, If able set up your router near the Xbox and PS2, you will have 4 ports on the router to hardwire the Consoles and then wireless to the Laptop and PC.
The cards on that page would be fine(I would look at going to Newegg.com for prices, Or check your local retailer for sales. I know Compusa Had a sale a few weeks ago for a Linksys wireless g card for about $15.
Wireless B is Old school Wireless. Slow and little to no Security.
Wireless G is the Current standard, It has faster transfer rates on a local network and has a more powerful signal then B, so you can access your wireless network further from the router.
Wireless N is much faster for networking and has a much longer range then either B or G But has not been standardized Like B and G, So while it has several benifits it also has a few problems, its not always reliable in connecting with older B and G adapters, and each brand has different standards for thier equipment.
Even if they dont I would still suggest using a WPA/WPA2 to secure your network, all it takes is someone wardriving to enter your network and get complete access to your systems.
