Microsoft PC adapter for Xbox 360 wireless controller?
Are there any alternatives to using the MS gaming adapter for connecting a wireless 360 controller to a PC? MS’s adapter does not look very laptop friendly, with what looks like at least 3ft of cable and a pretty bulky adapter, so even just cutting down the cord would either create a large thing to get catch on something or even if the usb plug was mounted flush it is big enough to block surrounding usb ports. Google search results show mixed results on whether it will connect via the supplied charging cable or the plug and play kit, so can it just be used via usb?
No, the plug and play or play and charge kit does not really connect an Xbox 360 controller to a PC. It just supplies power. The controller is still passing its signals via wireless.
There is no real alternative to using the Microsoft Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. The Xbox 360 controller uses proprietary wireless technology, so they have a monopoly on making devices that allow their controllers to work on the PC.
