To say that 2006 was a banner year for humor in print would be in a word: Stupid. Like usual, those of us who crave humor in the form of books and newspaper columns have once again been screwed by the giant anti-humor movement that continues to sweep the publishing industry. Not that 2006 was completely devoid of humor, after all, we still have the federal government.
Despite the fact that publishing companies and newspaper editors continue to mass produce rejection letters for humorists, most of which contain phrases such as “Does not meet our current needs” or “Your apparent lack of talent and unattractive appearance does not meet our current needs,” one of the sultans of humor managed to release a title.
Dave Barry, Pulitzer Prize winner, former Miami Herald columnist, and full time presidential candidate, brought fourth Dave Barry’s Money Secrets.
As you may have guessed, even though the title cleverly disguises it, the book is about money. Not just any money though, our money. No not yours personally, my my aren’t we vain?
Anyway, Barry tackles this subject in trademark style. The book is chocked full of money saving tips, most of which are guaranteed to drive you straight to bankruptcy, and of course brings to light the wonderful institution that is the federal government and their spending practices.
I found this to be one of the best Barry titles to date. As usual I devoured the book in one sitting, along with several malt fermented beverages (required for reading of this kind.) Like always I laughed out loud through most of the book and attempted to count the Suze Orman jokes (576) while absorbing the in-depth financial wisdom.
To that end I would suggest that you visit the nearest bookstore and procure a copy of Dave Barry’s Money Secrets. While you are there, perhaps you could pick up a copy of my book, I’ve Tasted My Foot So Much It’s Now My Favorite Food. This title, my first published book, has sold briskly (2 copies, thanks Mom and Dad) and is available at fine retailers (Bob’s Chicken and Books) nation wide.
